INSTALL NGINX STACK ON CENTOS

What is Nginx? Nginx is a better free alternative to Apache because its lightweight and RAM-friendly. It can perform better and faster than Apache, particularly when the number of concurrent site visitors is on the rise. The only downside of Nginx is that not many users familiar with Nginx because it has different DNA and anatomy compared to Apache. For instance, Nginx doesn’t support Apache’s .htaccess so users need to convert their htaccess content to nginx configuration.

Step 1-

Stop and Remove Apache.

service httpd stop

yum remove httpd -y

Step 2-

Install Epel

EPEL stands for Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux. Because yum as a package manager does not include the latest version of nginx in its default repository, installing EPEL will make sure that nginx on CentOS stays up to date.

To install EPEL, open terminal and type in:

sudo yum install epel-release

Press “y”, when prompted.

Step 3- Installing Nginx

Open terminal and type in:

sudo yum install nginx

After you answer yes to the prompt twice (the first time relates to importing the EPEL gpg-key), nginx will finish installing on your VPS.

Step 4 – Start Nginx

To get nginx running, type:

service nginx start

Step 5-

Changes in Nginx’s configuration file (Optional)If you want to make any changes in the Nginx config file type in the command.vi /etc/nginx/nginx.conf

Checking:

Open up your browser and type in your domain or IP.

And you shall see something similar to this.
